The supplement to child benefit Kinderzuschlag in Germany, the so-called child supplement, is an additional social benefit that parents with low incomes can receive. The supplement to child benefit was introduced so that parents could concentrate primarily on raising their children without having to work hard at the same time.

Who can apply for the supplement to child benefit in Germany?

In Germany, the supplement to child benefit is paid to parents for children living in their household if their income is not sufficient to cover the needs of raising underage children. In order to receive the supplement to child benefit, the following requirements must also be met:

the total income of both parents must be at least 900 euros gross (for single parents at least 600 euros gross),

from April 1, 2020, the upper income limit will no longer apply in accordance with the provisions of the Social Security Code,

the children must not be older than 25 years,

By granting the supplement to child benefit, the family's financial situation improves to such an extent that it is no longer necessary to receive unemployment benefit.

How high is the supplement to child benefit in Germany?

Due to the abolition of income caps on January 1, 2020, more parents are entitled to the German supplement to child benefit. The supplement to child benefit is paid monthly by the family fund and amounts to up to 185 euros per child.

What documents are required to apply for supplement to child benefit in Germany?

  1. You must receive child benefit – approval notice KG + KG number.
  2. Monthly wage certificates in Germany (pay slip) from the last month
  3. Certificate of earnings from the employer
  4. Employment contract in Germany
  5. Confirmation of school education for the child if the child is over 18 years old.
  6. Registration in Germany/rental agreement
  7. Confirmation of insurance in Germany (e.g. copy of the social insurance card, copy of the health insurance card, social insurance notification, A1)
  8. Account details to which the service is to be transferred (IBAN + BIC/SWIFT, preferably a currency account in EUR)
